Mumbai, May 23 (IANS) A benchmark index of the Indian equities markets was trading 1.76 percent down around 2.30 p.m. trade Thursday, on the back of news emanating from the US that the stimulus programme could come to an end soon and weakness in other Asian bourses.

Sentiments were downbeat after US Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke suggested Wednesday that the bond purchase by the US central bank may be reduced if the US economy improves further.

This spooked the Asian markets like Japan’s Nikkei, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and China’s Shanghai Composite Index. The Nikkei reported a massive 7.32 percent loss, followed by Hang Seng which went 2.54 percent down, and Shanghai Composite Index that closed 1.16 percent lower.

The Bernanke statement also affected European markets. Britain’s FTSE 100 was trading 1.86 percent down, while the German DAX was trading 2.59 percent lower. The French CAC 40 was ruling 2.41 percent down.

Trading in all the major sectors was poor, as investors and traders are worried that foreign institutional investors (FIIs) who have been buying heavily in the Indian market may pull back funds.

The sectors which lost the most intra-day Thursday were bank, oil and gas, public sector undertakings (PSU), metal and realty stocks.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened in the negative at 19,971.37 points, was trading at 19,708.64 points, down 353.60 points or 1.76 percent from its previous day close at 20,062.24 points.

The Sensex touched a high of 20,027.56 points and a low of 19,685.59 points in intra-day trade.

The wider 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) has also shown downward movement and was trading at 2.10 percent or 127.85 points down at 5,966.65 points.

The BSE Banke index was down 413.44 points, oil and gas index slid to 170.51 points, while the PSU index dipped 166.75 points, metal index plunged 164.89 points and realty index plunged 104.80 points.

Chennai, May 23 (IANS) German automobile major Daimler AG will start exports of FUSO range of trucks – belonging to Japanese Mitsubishi FUSO Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) – to Sri Lanka out of its plant near here from June, said a senior official near here Thursday.

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Pvt Ltd, the Indian subsidiary of German automobile maker Daimler AG, Thursday rolled out FUSO range of trucks from its plant near here to be launched in 15 markets in Asia and Africa.

“The FUSO range of trucks made in India is only for exports. Sri Lanka will be first export market for the trucks. This year we will export around 1,000 trucks out of India. The Indian plant has enough capacity to cater to the Indian and export markets,” Albert Kirchmann, head-Daimler Trucks Asia and president and CEO MFTBC, told reporters.

According to him, the intergrated Asia business model draws on the synergies of two Daimler outfits – DICV and MFTBC.

He said the new business model for Asia will enable Daimler AG to unlock full potential among the two firms.

The trucks rolled out of DICV’s plant- DICV’s BharatBenz and FUSO- have local content upto 90 percent, said Marc Llistosella, managing director at DICV.

“Daimler’s Asia strategy is not to counter balance the excess capacity in India. We are leveraging existing production network for global market,” he said.

Speaking to IANS, Kai-Uwe Seidenfuss, member of the board and senior vice president sales and after sales at MFTBC, said: “The initial plan is to roll out trucks out of DICV’s plant here. As of now there are no plans to roll out buses.”

Kirchmann said the combined target of MFTBC and DICV is to double annual sales to 290,000 units by 2020 while declining to give any breakup of figures between the two entitites.

The FUSO trucks range manufactured at DICV’s plant here comprise of five models spanning medium/heavy duty (25-49 ton) and light/medium duty (9-16 ton).

After Sri Lanka, the FUSO trucks will be exported to Bangladesh, Zambia, Kenya and Brunei this year.

Apart from rolling of FUSO trucks out DICV’s plant, Daimler has chalked out an integrated Asia research and development (R&D) plan leveraging DICV and Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) operations.

Hyderabad, May 23 (IANS) Former Andhra Pradesh minister Nagam Janardhana Reddy Thursday announced that he would merge his Telangana Nagara Samithi with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) next month.

He told reporters that the outfit would be formally merged with the BJP on June 3.

Janardhana Reddy if BJP leadership permit him, he would contest for Lok Sabha from Mahabubnagar constituency.

He claimed that BJP alone can achieve separate statehood to Telangana. He also said if Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was declared as BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, this would help the party form the government at the centre on its own.

Janardhana Reddy is currently an independent member of state legislative assembly from Nagarkurnool constituency in his native Mahabubnagar district.

A senior leader of Telugu Desam Party (TDP), he had staged revolt with two other leaders to protest the party’s stand over Telangana issue. They were suspended from the party in 2011.

He quit as a member of state assembly last year and was re-elected from the same constituency as an independent in the by-election. He floated a separate outfit and had been actively participating in the movement for separate Telangana state.

The 64-year-old is seven time legislator from Nagarkurnool constituency.

New Delhi, May 23 (IANS) The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a den of gambling, BJP leader Yashwant Sinha said Thursday and pressed for a detailed inquiry into the spot fixing in the tournament.

“IPL is nothing but a den of gambling. There is less cricket and more of gambling in the IPL. The spot fixing or match fixing does not appear to be confined to a few players or bookies. It appears to be a widespread net,” Sinha said, adding that such incidents had taken place in previous years too.

In his view, IPL matches had changed the character of the game of cricket.

“What is required is a detailed inquiry into who all are involved in match fixing. Who are responsible for reducing the game of cricket to a den of gambling; action should be taken under the law against all these people … however mighty or glamorous they may be. They must be brought to book and they should be brought to justice,” Sinha told a news channel here.

Talking about banning the IPL, Sinha said: “For the time being, the Supreme Court has not agreed to ban the IPL. I reserve my comment.”

Slamming the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), he said: “Obviously BCCI consists of a large number of eminent people, including ministers of the government. BCCI had failed to regulate IPL in the manner in which it should have been regulated.”

He said there was no need for new laws.

“There are already enough laws in this country… the question is proper enforcement. For every new situation, we shouldn’t think of a new law. But I’m not arguing on that point. Let them bring a new law against betting and match fixing, which will apply not only to cricket but to other sports also.”

At least 18 people — three IPL players, four former players and 11 bookies and their assistants — have been arrested by Delhi Police since May 16 in connection with spot fixing in IPL matches this season. There have been arrests in Mumbai as well.

Mumbai, May 23 (IANS) “ABCD” actor Punit Pathak will be seen dancing with international dancer Lauren Gottlieb in Colors’ dance reality show “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6″. He is looking forward to choreograph her as he would be able to think “out of the box” and “try new things”.

“I am anxious to show my talent. I love to choreograph and I want to show my dancing abilities on the show,” the choreographer-actor told IANS.

Pathak has been part of the second season of dance reality show “Dance India Dance”, in which he ended up being the second runner-up.

His “Jhalak…” partner Lauren Gottlieb had participated in the third season of “So you Think You Can Dance” and Pathak is excited to be teamed up with her again.

“We are on the same page (where participating in reality shows is concerned). She is the artist and my role is to choreograph. It is amazing to choreograph someone who is so talented. I can think out of the box and try new things,” he said.

Pathak feels that “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa” will be very different from “Dance India Dance”.

Thiruvananthapuram, May 23 (IANS) Kerala Industries and Information Technology Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty Thursday said some invisible forces were trying to stall the state’s progress on all fronts but refused to identify them.

“Whenever any project, including even widening of roads, is announced, there is stiff resistance from certain quarters… The opposition in our state is by and large supportive of most projects,” said Kunhalikutty.

“I do not want to spark a controversy by naming these forces. What we can do is to launch an awareness campaign to see that Kerala’s progress in not stalled,” said the minister.

Speaking to reporters, he said projects that faced opposition from the so-called invisible forces included the seaplane service which was ready for commissioning May 27.

By using small aircraft that land on water bodies, the project aims to provide an additional layer of transportation by offering last-mile connectivity to tourist destinations.

“Contrary to the fears raised by those who opposed the project, neither the environment nor any activity that is currently on (fishing) will have any problems,” the minister said.

“We assure that development will take place by protecting the environment,” added Kunhalikutty.

Port-of-Spain, May 23 (IANS) The Indian Caribbean Museum, described as “a national treasure, a window to the past, and an opportunity to see history come alive”, has been cited by a National Geographic publication that showcases 500 of the world’s most powerful and spiritual places and guides travellers who wish to visit them.

“This is a fitting recognition in just seven years of our existence, especially as we celebrate the 168th Indian Arrival Day May 30,” Sansbhan Jokhoo, the curator of the museum that serves as a link between indentured Indian labourers and the present, told IANS.

“The Indian Caribbean Museum has international prominence and recognition as the only one of its kind in the world. Not even India has one. And before the inauguration of the Kolkata memorial last year planners from India came to visit our facility,” Jokhoo said.

The Kolkata memorial, in the city’s Garden Reach area, remembers the indentured Indian labourers who left India during the 19th & early 20th centuries to work on plantations in the West Indies.

Between 1845 and 1917, approximately 148,000 Indians were brought to this country, principally from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, and worked to rescue the decaying plantations following the abolition of slavery by the British government.

It is to keep alive their memory that Satnarayan Maharaj, secretary general of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS) launched the museum, which features in “Sacred Places of a Lifetime – 500 of the World’s Most Peaceful and Powerful Destinations”.

The collection includes items such as rare musical instruments, agricultural objects, cooking utensils, pieces of clothing, ancient photographs and historical books. Objects of historical and aesthetic value include a sapat (wooden slipper) jata (grinding stone) boli (gourd bowl) and hassawa (grass knife). There is also a huge copper basin that was used for boiling cane syrup in the sugar factories up to the 1930s, and a dekha (a wooden contraption used for grinding cocoa, coffee beans, corn and rice).

The museum, which has become a research centre with the country’s National Archives, also houses an art gallery, a reference library and a computerised genealogical database. A botanical garden is also in the making. The institution is a member of the Caribbean Museum Association, which comprises 20 institutions spread across the region.

“The Indian Caribbean Museum is a national treasure, a window to the past, and an opportunity to see history come alive. To many visitors, it evokes memories of the past, a link to the present, and a vision for the future. The museum serves as a foundation for collective memory, cultural continuity and national development,” Jokhoo said.

“It provides a common experience that families can share across generations and serve as a link between revered ancestors and living people. The museum provides information on the cultural heritage of Indians in the Caribbean to themselves and to people of all ethnic backgrounds,” he added.

“The Caribbean Indian Museum holds fundamental importance and relevance to the continued kinship and affinity with India, and within the entire Indian diaspora, as it has myriad symbolic, cultural, religious and transcendental interpretations and meanings for all. It remains a monument for posterity. It will remain ageless,” Jokhoo said.

Since its inception, in excess of 45,000 persons from all walks of life from the four corners of the globe have visited the museum, according to Ann Marie Ramhit, an assistant.

She said that Dennison Moore, who wrote the Canadian government’s policy on multiculturalism, recently donated 107 books reflecting different aspects of India and the diaspora to the library.

“This donation has augmented our educational stock for research, as well as for leisure reading,” Ramhit added.

Winston Dookeran, now the Trinidad and Tobago foreign minister, had in 2006 opened the museum, located in the west-central part of Trinidad.

(Paras Ramoutar can be contacted at paras_ramoutar@yahoo.com)

New Delhi, May 23 (IANS) The government is committed to enacting the National Food Security Bill, which legally entitles poor families to five kilograms of subsidised grain per person per month, an official document said Thursday.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi Wednesday appealed to the opposition to help pass the bill in public interest.

According to a handbook on the achievements of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in the past nine years, there has been a more than threefold increase in food subsidy during this period, reflecting the government’s commitment to ensuring adequate food at affordable prices for all.

According to the handbook, while the government provides wheat at Rs.2 per kg and rice at Rs.3 per kg for poor families, the subsidy burden will be to the extent of Rs.18.10 per kg and Rs.21.63 per kg for wheat and rice, respectively.

The document said efforts to increase foodgrain production have yielded results. Efforts to strengthen the agriculture sector have led to record production of foodgrain in recent years.

Agriculture credit has increased fivefold to help small farmers improve productivity, it said.

Stocks are at record levels – rice at 347 lakh million tonnes and wheat at 427 lakh million tonnes.

New Delhi/Gurgaon/Noida, May 23 (IANS) Devil chicken with angry sauce, rigatroni au gratin washed down with grass jelly fresh milk: the capital’s culinary aficionados are in for a treat with renowned food chains from around the world entering the market and setting the stage for a global food fest.

Italian, Japanese, Vietnamese, Mexican, German, French, American, Greek, Thai, Chinese, Korean, Dutch, Portuguese, Ethiopian and Taiwanese – you name it and they are here. Offering authentic cuisines made from fresh ingredients, many of which are imported from the home country, the number of such plush restaurants has been steadily rising in the capital and suburban growth centres of Gurgaon and Noida.

Several restaurants which claim to offer authentic and not Indianised gastronomic delights have opened in the National Capital Region, more so in south Delhi owing to the large number of expatriates residing in the area.

“We believe in offering original recipes made from the freshest and authentic ingredients,” Simona Berzintu, manager of La Tagliatella, an Italian chain of restaurants which has opened its first branch in Delhi and has over 650 outlets across the globe, told IANS.

“Many restaurants sell Indianised versions of Italian food but we don’t. Our patrons get to savour the original taste of Italy,” she added.

Located in Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj, it offers more than 400 combinations of pasta, salads and ice-creams, among others. Rigatroni au gratin, pasta with aubergines and a crispy parmesan topping, is one of the most popular.

All its sauces and spices are imported from Italy to ensure authenticity in taste. A meal for two at the plush eatery costs around Rs. 2,000.

Simply Fondue, a US-based chain of restaurants, offers American and Mexican cuisine though the highlight of the restaurant is a Swiss-French-Italian fondue that is prepared at the diner’s table.

Shiny silver pots containing piping hot cheese are placed on induction plates built into the tables, while raw vegetables like mushrooms, broccoli and cocktail onions, as also bread and meat is dipped into the cheese and eaten with a fork.

“Authenticity is the key to succeed as nowadays there are restaurants aplenty which serve a hybrid of a foreign and Indian cuisine,” Tenzin Delek, manager of the Nehru Place-based restaurant, told IANS.

To further raise the levels of authenticity, the head chefs of many of the restaurants belong to the country whose cuisine is on offer.

The restaurants have gone the extra mile to cater to Indian customers, many of whom are vegetarians, by altering their menus a bit or introducing new dishes tagged “pure vegetarian” and whose sauces and cheese do not contain eggs.

“We knew we would be catering to a lot of vegetarian customers; so we introduced the all cheese vegetarian fondue served with vegetables and fruit,” said Delek.

Sharing a similar view, Rahul Parashar, manager of sales and marketing at the Saket-based B Bar, which offers a mix of Asian cuisines including Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese, had to increase the number of vegetarian main course dishes from six to twelve.

“We have localised the menu to suit to the Indian palette,” he said.

Despite the expensive tag, sales are on the rise with an equal number of foreign and Indian customers visiting such restaurants.

But it’s the new generation of young customers who are open to trying new cuisines and are adventurous that are driving the sales.

“We get a lot of foreign tourists and expats along with our Indian customers,” Raj Kumar, the manager of Taiwanese tea franchise Chatime that offers teas from around the world.

Situated in Noida, the most popular drink with the tourists, many of whom are Asian, is bubble tea. It has chewy tapioca flowers seeds that can be eaten while drinking the tea.

“Youngsters are definitely playing a major role in driving our sales as they tend to experiment with new food and that is why metros are seeing a deluge of such restaurants,” added Raj Kumar.

For South Africa-based Nando’s (DLF Promenade, Vasant Kunj) which serves Afro-Portuguese cuisine and is famous the world over for its Peri-Peri chicken, India’s love for spicy food is reason enough for it to come here.

“We foresee India as a market with huge potential which is re-enforced by Indians’ traditional love for spices. In our case it’s different flavours of Peri-Peri ranging from lemon and herb to mild and hot to extra hot,” Natasha Malik, brand manager at Nando’s Delhi/NCR, told IANS.

“We believe our menu suits the Indian palette very well,” she added.

So, food lovers, grab your forks and knives and get ready to satiate your tastebuds with global gastronomical delights!

Lagos (Nigeria), May 23 (IANS) India wants increased partnership with Nigeria in education through institutional cooperation, content development, faculty exchange and joint ventures that would enhance the West African country’s human resource devlopment, according to Indian High Commissioner Mahesh Sachdev.

“Bilateral cooperation in education has had a proud history and remains a priority. A generation of Nigerians have fond memories of being taught by Indian teachers and professors, thousands of whom contributed to Nigerian education system till into mid-1980s,” Sachdev said at the just concluded Second Indian Education Expo in Nigeria’s financial hub Lagos.

He said the “glorious bilateral past” and the vast future potential should encourage more collaboration.

Sachdev said the Indian government has put in place a programme to train 500 million young people in vocational skills over the next 10 years worldwide. “India has the passion for human resource development and would want to be a partner to achieve this.”

This year’s Expo held May 16-17 was the second after a similar one held in 2011 where only five India-based institutions attended. More than 12 Indian universities and institutes of higher learning took part in the event organised by M/s Chartered Exhibitions & Media Private Limited, Mumbai (India), with the support of the Indian High Commission.

All the institutions used the opportunity to showcase their graduate and postgraduate courses in engineering, medicine and other programmes to the eligible students.

Following the maiden event, 1,200 Nigerian students entered universities across India last year.

“Higher Studies courses in India are becoming increasingly popular with Nigerian students due to many factors such as credible well-recognised and relevant degrees, English as a medium of instruction, competitive costs, similar social and climatic conditions and a hassle-free visa regime,” said the High Commission.

Hitesh Pujara, a director of Chartered Exhibitions & Media Private Limited, told IANS that India has a large presence of Nigerian students and in addition, the country has many past students who have good memories of their stay in India and this makes it easy for others to follow.

Pujara said this year’s Expo had been very successful because of the numbers that attended and the response has been very positive.

“In India, any African is assured of quality education, education that is affordable with cost, similar culture and affordable living cost in addition to good practical experience which is an attraction that most foreign students have found worthwhile,” he added.

Pujara indicated that similar student recruitment drives would be taken to other parts of Africa. “India, being a large partner of Africa, will be happy to do so” if other African countries provided the support, motivation and cooperation.

New Delhi, May 23 (IANS) “Saat Phere” fame Rajshree Thakur, who is making a comeback to the small screen after three years, says her motto is to do prominent characters that suit here personality.

Best known for playing dusky Saloni in “Saat Phere”, which was her debut on the small screen, she will now be seen as Jeevantha Bai (Maharana Pratap’s mother) in Sony’s upcoming show “Bharat Ka Veer Putra – Maharan Pratap”.

“I would like to do a variety of roles but it should suit my personality. I would not do something which I don’t like,” she told IANS.

Rajshree, who is making a comeback after three years, has always been fascinated by historical stories and characters.

She said: “It’s a historical character and I always wanted to do something like this. I am making a comeback and it’s a role I always had a fascination for.”

“After ‘Saat Phere’ I had decided that I will do something strong and prominent. And this role came my way, so, it feels great,” she added.

The 31-year-old actress feels that both the characters – Saloni and Jeevantha Bai are a bit similar to each other as “both of them are strong women”. “It’s not just a motherly role, but it’s also about a woman,” she added.

“Maharana Pratap’s father married 19 times after Jeevantha Bai. So you will see much more than a mother – how she feels after her husband gets married 19 more times and how she is solely responsible for Maharana Pratap, etc. So it’s a very strong character like Saloni.”

Talking about her co-actor Faisal Khan (Maharana Pratap), she appreciated his hard work and said “there are a lot of things that I can learn from him”.

She knew Faisal as the DID (“Dance India Dance”) winner, but when he started reading his lines during a mock shoot, Rajshree was totally amazed.

She said: “Nobody would say that he is doing it for the first time. He is very hard working. He is very talkative, he talks a lot and asks a lot of questions. If something is missing in a scene, be it in costumes or the sets, he will immediately point it out, and he is very concerned. He just gets into the scene.”

Vancouver, May 23 (IANS) The Asia-Pacific region will continue to power global economic growth in 2013, but the region’s increasing ageing population will cast a shadow on the long-term development, according to a Canadian think-tank.

“Productivity gains and a large, young working-age population have done much to boost Asian economic growth over the past three decades. But Asia’s demographic dividend is quickly coming to an end,” said Kip Beckman, author of the Conference Board of Canada’s recent published report World Outlook: Spring 2013.

Due to fewer births and longer life expectancies, the average age of the population in Asia is increasing rapidly. Today, 7 percent of Asia’s population is above 65 years old, while the share has increased to 23 percent in Japan, reported Xinhua citing the Conference Board of Canada.

According to the organization’s analysis, the changing demographic profile in the region comes from two major shifts. First, women in Asia have become better educated, making them more financially independent and less likely to rush into marriage at a young age.

Second, the cost of raising children has risen substantially. For instance, in South Korea, education costs are a major contributor to the country’s huge household debt — currently 160 percent of income.

To maintain future economic growth, the think-tank suggested the region increase investment in education to enhance productivity and consider more open immigration policies than currently existing ones.

Panaji, May 23 (IANS) Aiming to position Goa as a leader in green practices in construction, manufacturing and hospitality industry, a CII conference on eco-friendly practices will be held later this month, organisers said Thursday.

Amar Britto, chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) Indian Green Building Council, said leading brands from across the country would attend the two-day conference ‘Sustainable Development for a Green Goa’ starting May 30.

“The major objective of the conference is to mainstream the green business movement and enable Goa to emerge as a major player in green practices and to enhance the use of green practices and concepts in the construction, manufacturing, service and hospitality industry,” Britto said.

The conference gains significance even as civil society groups have cautioned that Goa was going through a spell of haphazard “over development”, especially, with large hill-tracts and coastal areas being purchased by real estate developers.

Britto said the conference would also create opportunities in green education and jobs and enable market transformation of eco-friendly products and equipment.

According to CII, in India there were 1,879 registered green buildings amounting to more than 1.30 billion sq ft of footprint.

Chennai, May 23 (IANS) The untitled Tamil remake of Telugu blockbuster “Ala Modalaindi” starring Gautham Karthik went on the floors here Thursday.

“The shooting of Tamil remake of ‘Ala Modalaindi’, which is being produced by Raviprasad Productions, has begun in full swing,” said a statement from the production house.

B.V. Nandini Reddy’s “Ala Modalaindi”, featuring Nani and Nithya Menon, reaped gold at the box-office. A low-budget Telugu romantic-comedy, it reportedly collected Rs.15 crore on an investment of Rs.4 crore.
