Coquihalla Highway crash in BC claims three lives

Vancouver: A fiery single vehicle crash on  B.C.’s Coquihalla Highway near the Lac Le Jeune exit has left three persons dead, while two others were lucky to be alive.

The crash happened just after 7:30 p.m. PT between Kamloops and Merritt, near the Lac Le Jeune exit, Friday evening.

Police say a  2003 Ford Expedition, carrying five people, went out of control after hitting the soft shoulder between Merritt and Kamloops, resulting in roll over and  then the vehicle plummet 15 metres over an embankment.   Two of the dead – a 49-year old man and 61-year-old woman – were from New Westminster, while the third victim was a 41-year-old man from Surrey.Two other persons injured in the crash have been hospitalized.

Police do not suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash, but are they are not ruling out speed.Police say witnesses, including a doctor and a nurse, provided first aid before emergency crews arrived.   Names of the victims have not been released.
