Jalandhar: Sunil Kumar Jyoti of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been elected the fifth mayor of Jalandhar on Tuesday. He was chosen unanimously. Jyoti, a two-time councillor from ward number 5, is a close confidant of local MLA and chief parliamentary secretary KD Bhandari, who lobbied hard for him.

The Deputy Mayor’s post went to Arvinder Kaur Oberoi, a two-time councillor, whose husband Kuldeep Oberoi, too, has made it to the Municipal Corporation twice.Arvinder, however, was eyeing the Senior Deputy Mayor’s post. Kamaljit Singh Bhatia of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) retained the post of senior deputy mayor though he had been convicted and sentenced to three-year imprisonment on an IAS officer’s complaint.

In the 60-member House, the BJP has 20 councillors, SAD 11, Congress 22, the BSP and PPP one each and Independents five.

Industries, Commerce and Technical Education Minister Anil Joshi presided over a breakfast meeting with the new SAD-BJP councillors and party leaders prior to the elections.

With Jyoti’s election, Bhandari is likely to have an upper hand in the party than former local bodies minister and local MLA Manoranjan Kalia, who backed Ravi Mahendru for the mayor’s post.Jyoti’s candidature was also supported by outgoing Mayor Rakesh Rathour.
