Calgary: Eight Indo-Canadians have been arrested and police have seized a $1.5-million home in Rocky View County under proceeds of crime legislation, after breaking up a major drug peddling racket involved in Calgary, Abbotsford and Vancouver.
City police and a special RCMP unit began an investigation after getting information about a drug trafficking ring in the area with connections to B.C.’s Lower Mainland.
Police say Parvinder Singh Bagri ,24, main kingpin was enjoying a comfortable life on the outskirts of Calgary, living mortgage-free in a $1.5-million home and owned many luxury cars. While police singled out Parvinder as the alleged the leader of the operation, they also accuse his brother, mother and father of being players in the drug cartel.
Police say that for several years, Parvinder and three others from the Lower Mainland of British Columbia sold B.C. drugs in and around Calgary.Search warrants were executed at eight separate locations in the Calgary area.
The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team said that throughout their investigation, police seized 2.7 kilograms of cocaine, one kilogram of marijuana, guns and a Taser. They’ve also used proceeds of crime legislation to seize the luxurious $1.5-million home in Rocky View County, $166,000 in cash, jewelry worth $18,000 and seven luxury vehicles worth $110,000 ,that included BMWs and Land Rover.
RCMP Sgt. Stephen Scott said the seized goods will be held pending the court process.”They were driving BMWs and Land Rovers and living a lifestyle we normal people can’t afford,” he said.
Police continue to try to connect the money gained from drug sales and its use to purchase items with the proceeds of crime.
Police said the seizure is one of the largest in recent years in the area. Not only did police identify an operation, believed to have been running undetected for years and bringing in millions of dollars, they also believe they dismantled it from the top down and put it out of business.>
Parvinder Singh Bagri, 24, of Rocky View, and B.C. residents Kalwarn Singh Dhillon, 23, Apraj Singh Bassi, 22, and Keerit Singh Brar, 20, face multiple drug trafficking, firearm, criminal organization and proceeds of crime charges.
Charges are also placed against Rajvinder Bagri, 22, Gurdawar Bagri, 50, Jatinder Bagri, 52, all of Rocky View, and Kanwal Gill, 36, of Chestermere for laundering the proceeds of crime.
