According to police officials the person accused of killing these Akali leaders is a notorious drug smuggler and he was on a one-month parole from Moga sub jail.
It is alleged that led by Gurjant Singh Janta of village Khai, a convicted for the crime of drug smuggling and released on parole last month, a group of about 7 miscreants attacked the house of Zila Parishad member Gurmail Singh Khai and Karamjit Singh Khai, Akali leaders in Khai village and killed them on the spot after making discriminate firing. Gurmail Singh Khai was the district senior vice president of SAD also.
Sutjit Singh Grewal senior superintendent of police told that in return of the firing by the body guard of the deceased Akali leader Gurmail Singh Khai, one of the accomplices of the accused Dharanjit Singh of same village Khai died on the spot. “The attackers came by Mahindra Scorpio jeep and opened fire on the SAD leaders. Giani Hardeep Singh was injured in firing and attackers fled from the spot,” he added.
Partap Singh,station house officer of Nihal Singh Wala police station told that the police have registered a case against Gurjant Singh Janta, Malkit Singh, Dharamjit Singh Dharma (all of village Khai), Mara Singh of village Madheke and some unidentified persons under section 302, 303, 307, 392, 148, 149, 182 of Indian Panel Code and 25-27-54-59 of Arms Act.
Sources in police revealed that Gurjant Singh Janta, the accused was convicted for the offence of drug smuggling and he was undergoing the sentence in Moga sub jail.Last month, he was released on one month parole but even after the elapse of the one month parole period, he did not return to the jail, thus he was declared an absconder. Police revealed that the deceased Akali leaders had longtime rivalry with the accused. After the postmortem the dead bodies were handed over to the relatives of the deceased.
